Benchtop SEM

The Early Earth and Experimental Geochemistry Lab installed a Hitachi TM4000Plus Tabletop Microscope in 2020. The scanning electron microscope is equipped with a backscattered electron detector (BSE), a secondary electron detector (SE) and a Bruker QUANTAX energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) system. Additional features include four electron accelerating voltage options (5 kV, 10 kV, 15 kV, 20 kV), various vacuum modes, and a camera navigation system to easily navigate to a sample's target observation area.  The sample chamber can accommodate sample sizes of up to 80 mm in diameter and 50 mm in thickness.

The Bruker EDS system allows for easy spectra acquisition, object mode or multi point analysis, standardless and standard-related quantitative spectra evaluation, line scan options, elemental mapping, report generating and more.

If you are interested in using the SEM, or would like to request sample analysis, please contact Dustin Trail (dustin.trail@rochester.edu) or Amanda Maslyn (amanda.maslyn@gmail.com) to discuss analytical needs.
